HOW FAST?

For this week I am going to start with the basics how I found out about Intermittent fasting and other weight loss methods that I have tried and I will give you a basic idea of what exactly it is.

I have tried different types of diets in my weight loss journey and I found a few that were very effective but they always had the same results once I met my goals which was the yo-yo effect. I would always put some weight back on once I got off the diet it seemed like it was a never ending cycle of dieting and then reaching my goals only to put the pounds back on I honestly thought that I was going to have to diet for the rest of my life and that was something that I was not willing to do.

Here are some dieting methods that I have tried that have been effective

1. vegetarian diet (not vegan)- This type of dieting was the first one it was the on that started my weight loss journey and I lost a total of 50lbs but since I love steak and all of the meaty deliciousness this was not maintainable. With this diet I couldn’t eat anything that my family cooked because it all had meat it was great for weight loss and it made me feel amazing with more energy and motivation but it also made me cry because I couldn’t eat carne asada.

2. Mediterranean- essentially this diet consisted of having seafood and since I was not very experienced in cooking fish my go to was Cod or shrimp, after a while I was just not able to stand the smell of fish but it was very effective oddly, this was when I learned about veggie substitutions in plates that included pasta(such as zoodles or zucchini noodles). I lost my next 30 lbs on this diet.

3. Counting calories- this method has been the most effective one that I have used and it was super hard, I didn’t know what I was doing I just knew that I had to do this. I learned that the easiest way to keep good on you calories was by cooking all of the meals at once and having putting them away or meal prepping. With this method I lost another 20lbs.

4. Keto- well what can I say about this dieting method to tell you the truth I did not lose any weight with this because I gave up about a week into it. It looked amazing on paper, I mean you get to eat cheese, bacon, steak and ham and what not and the results of other people were great. I could not get past the feeling of it I always felt gross and it really affected my skin it was just not for me. I knew of the keto flu which was the name of the reaction and that it was normal, all I had to do is get passed the first couple of weeks and it would go away. I plan to give this method a try once again to see what results I have but it will not be anytime soon.

I am not trying to persuade anyone to not try any of these methods my point to this is to motivate everyone to try different methods. All of these worked for me it pushed me to lose 100 lbs but the reason I kept moving on and trying more methods was because I kept hitting a weight plateau which made me lose motivation which made me gain some of the weight back, which pushed me to try something different. With the calorie count method I did not plateau but it was starting to get hard and there was not way that I could do it forever and I did not want gain the weight back so I started doing some research which helped me better understand why I was not losing anymore weight. In my research I stumbled across intermittent fasting, it stated that all of the top stars in Hollywood do it and that it is a new trend, I normally do not believe those types of ads but I decided to focus on finding more information about the subject and what I found was that it was simple to do all I had to do was skip one meal a day and that it normally would be breakfast. Yes, I know what you are probably thinking WHAT, SKIP THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY? Yes that is exactly what I am saying, if you skip one meal a day a you will naturally consume less calories.

For example:

If your normal day is like this

Breakfast 500-800 cal

Lunch 600-800 cal

Dinner 700-1000 cal

You are consuming anywhere 1800 to 2600 cals per day by the way if you’re not into bodybuilding then you should probably not be having 2600 calories. Now eliminate one of those meals and naturally you will be consuming less calories, the meals that are options for cutting out are either breakfast or dinner. Since you are eliminating meals it is easier to plan out what food you will be consuming during the time you are able to eat.

So to be exact, fasting is scheduling when you eat and I do not mean scheduling like eat chicken at 3pm then at 5pm and so on, intermittent fasting is just setting a time of the day that you are able to eat for example my schedule goes like this:

(Since I work night shift I had to make two schedules one for workdays and one for days off.)

1. The days that I work I eat my first meal at 6 then I snack any time before my next meal and usually I eat it whenever I have a free minute at work. My last meal of the night is between 130 and 2 am which is an 8 hour window meaning I fast for 16hrs but I make sure that I get all of my calories in with those two meals and the snack.

2. On days that I do not work I don’t eat until either 12pm or 2pm depending on how hungry I am feeling of course my first day off I fast for a shorter amount of time but my window still closes at 8pm or 10pm putting me back on the 8/16 fasting schedule.

At first it might sound confusing but when you get used to it the schedule works great, plus fasting has been what made me survive the holidays I managed to stay the same weight and I ate everything ha.

There is so much more information that I want to share with you about intermittent fasting so keep an eye out for my weekly posts I will be going over where the idea of intermittent fasting comes from what other types of this dieting methods there are.

The do/due year

To start off hopefully everyone had a wonderful beginning of the new year.

You might be wondering Why I named 2019 the “do/due” year. (It’s both do and due please do not mistake it for the doodoo year haha) Well, I have come to realize that even though I was able to come out of my comfort zone last year there are still things that I would like to do but terrify me, so I have decided to do them and also when all of my planning comes due is now time for action.

2019 will be a year of great growth for my wife and I and I will work everyday to make this come true.

today I wanted begin this post by listing everything that I accomplished in 2018 that I am very proud of

• Kept a healthy and happy marriage

• Met my income goal

• Met my physical goals

1. Got not only one stripe but two in my jiu-jitsu journey

2. Participated in a jiu-jitsu tournament and got 2nd place

3. Participated in two 5k races

4. Participated in an obstacle course race

5. Spent my summer outdoors

• Met my personal goals:

1. One of them was trying new things

2. I read so much more and I learned a lot in 2018

3. Took not only one but two vacations this year

• Started a blog where I can share my experiences and try to motivate people to live better and happier.

• Stepped out of my comfort zone.

• Learned so much

Now on to bigger and better things when I was creating my vision board for 2019 I became excited knowing that I was able to mentally grow so much in 2018 and how much more growth awaits me in this new year. I honestly felt like 2018 was the best year of my life because it was the first year ever in which I felt normal and for the first time ever I felt like I had control of my life. I felt like my past was no longer dictating my future, and that just because a person decided that they wanted to act selfishly and hurt you it doesn’t mean that it has to stay with you forever. This year my plans are so much bigger, I plan to improve in every aspect of my life; physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

Obviously not everything is going to go as I plan but my strategy for making year successful will be to put my energy on my biggest goals and then work in the smaller ones. For example if my goals for this year include reading at least one book a month and spending more time at the gym then I will make an effort to find books about fitness. I can read them while I workout, before or after works too.

For this year I have decided to choose some goals that absolutely have to achieve and focus more energy on working towards those and I have also set some goals that I would like to accomplish but are not my priority. The reason that I decided to have priority and non priority goals was because even though I would love to accomplish everything on my list, I also do not want to overwhelm myself and set myself up for failure.

Tips to having a successful year:

1. Write down your goals I know that this was in my last post but I cannot stress how important it is to have a visual reminder

2. Prioritize your goals the last thing you want to do is have you year be too overwhelming to the point of giving up

3. Make sure you do what you want to do doesn’t matter what it is just do it

4. Allow yourself to have fun- there is no point in making goals to make you the best you when there is no fun involved

5. Positivity is key- no matter how rainy your day may seem let positive thoughts be your umbrella.

6. Goals need to be by you for you- the opinion of others do not matter when it comes to your happiness

7. Last but not least you will grow and change as the year goes let your goals do the same- like a tree changes with every season so should you.

8. Crush it!!!

NOW ON TO BIGGER BETTER THINGS

Ready, set GOals!!

Hello!! hopefully everyone had a wonderful Christmas

It’s that time of the year again the new year new me time where we all make resolutions to become better people. We all make lists of how to better ourselves whether it is being healthier or working out more or being nicer to people, only to abandon the list by February. I know I used to be guilty of this, every year I would make the same resolutions and abandon them by the end of January. And when the next new year came around I would feel like had not accomplished anything but yet again I would do it all over again. For years this was a cycle of setting goals and abandoning them and I was really wanting to get something accomplished but I would never seemed to be able to cross any of my goals off. So I sat down to do some research on ideas for goals and I came across some very good information. The idea was that I should make goals that were specific and achievable. For example:

If your goal is to be healthier

• Maybe set goals like

• Go to the gym 3x a week

• Eat one healthy meal per day

• Lose 5-10lbs by February or March

Or if your goal is to be nicer try

• Give someone a compliment everyday

• smile more

• Hold the door open for someone

And another thing, just because your list says something at the beginning of the year doesn’t mean that you can’t change or modify it throughout the year. The resolution list should be a guide to see where you start and end your year, hopefully you are able to reach your goals and you are able to change them to something bigger and better.

Here is an example of my resolution list that I made at the end of 2017 for 2018

• Lose 15 lbs

• Get a stripe promotion (in jiu-jitsu)

• Complete 2 5k races

• Complete an obstacle course race

• Pay debt off

• Buy new car

• Travel to the coast

• Learn

As I am making my new list for 2019 look back at how much I have accomplished and I truly feel a sense of pride in everything I was able to cross off

To run the risk of sounding cliche 2019 will be my year as it should be for everyone I mean don’t get me wrong 2018 has been an amazing year and I am just excited to see what 2019 has in store for my wife and I.

So to recap

1. Write down your goals

2. Make monthly goals that way you feel like you’re making progress

3. Cross them off as you go

4. Take pictures when you accomplish one in order to track progress

5. Have fun it’s your own list and only base it off of what you want to do not what you think others expect of you.

Let’s make 2019 ours and start off with positivity.

Prep Yourself!!

My experiences with meal prepping

For those that don’t know, I really enjoy meal prepping, I mean the act of actually making the food fills me with frustration because I just get lazy and don’t want to do it. In all honesty that is my own fault because I tend to leave meal prepping for the night or when I’m extremely tired and ready for bed, but the only thing that motivates me to keep doing it is the fact that It has been the main ingredient to my successful weight loss recipe, and no I’m not being cocky by saying successful because I have lost 120 lbs with workout and eating right. The first 70 lbs were just eating healthier and having a strong will but trust me, when it comes to food will power can be worn down. I felt like a ballon of will power and each temptation I came across was a puff of air being blown into it until POP!! I couldn’t hold any more air. When I started to prepare my meals for the week I started to see big changes, at first it was hard and confusing but I still kept on doing it and next thing I knew I had lost another 50 Lbs and my knowledge about dieting had grown. (By no means am I an expert in it but I know what works for me) It is very difficult to keep up a healthy lifestyle based on pure “will” and the continuous debate of why you should keep away from junk food makes it ten times harder. What you need is a plan to give your goals some structure and allow you to focus on meeting your goals. Well, structure is what meal prepping has created for me it allows me follow an eating schedule, and I don’t mean schedule like every two hours or set times of the day what I mean is that I have food ready for each day of my week. Did your parents ever give you the we have food at home comment as you were driving by McDonald’s? Mine did it, they usually said no because we have beans at home and as a tear rolled down my chubby cheek we drove away. Having food ready for me to eat allows me to be an adult and have the “no because I have beans(food) at home,” conversation with myself, I mean I still drive away from McDonald’s with a tear rolling down my chubby cheek but at least I know that I can meet my fitness goals.

So to recap:

  • yes, staying away from junk food is a great start to getting healthier but you need structure in order to meet all of your goals.
  • A strong will along with meal prepping and exercising can help you become a better you.
  • Remember to never forget why you started.

“A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.” – Harvey Mackay

I came across this quote and felt like it went well with my fitness journey, because up until I started to work on my fitness everything was just I remember being fat and wishing I was a size large in shirts instead of barely fitting into a xxl and ready to go up another size and at least a 38 in pants size instead of a 44. Now I fit into a medium but I wear large because mediums are too short ha and my pants size is 36 and it all started to come true once I made a plan to help me reach my goals.

Now imagine the weight or clothing size you dream of being, now work on creating a plan through workouts and healthy meal prepping.

Of course I am not done, yes I have reached my goals but I also have created new ones and it will be difficult but by learning and planning I will achieve them and of course with some determination and hard work.

Meal prepping Tips

  1. Experiment with recipes you enjoy and just change some ingredients to make it healthier.
  2. Experiment with flavors and spices you don’t have to stick to just salt and black pepper remember there are such things as herbs.
  3. You can never go wrong with chicken.
  4. All veggies are good for you so choose the ones you like the most (ie. I strongly dislike Brussel sprouts and will never include them in my meals)
  5. Fruits are good for you as well, just remember that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
  6. Try new recipes Pinterest is great for finding new recipes.
  7. Make sure you eat enough I use the Lose it! App to track goals and calories I really love this app it’s simple and more importantly FREE.

Work it out

Trying to keep eating healthy and exercising during the holidays may be difficult, because it feels like everyone is having parties and making special dishes. What is difficult is getting back to a healthy mindset, I feel like we have one bad meal and we think we cannot start our diet or fitness routine until the beginning of the year. Just because you ate a bit too much for thanksgiving doesn’t mean that it is impossible to get back on track or even start living healthier. If you are asking how this is possible, well, there are 33 days between thanksgiving and Christmas which is plenty of time to get used to a routine or get back on track towards meeting your goals.

Here are some workout ideas that can help give you a great start to getting back on track:

1. Box jumps: 10-15 minutes at your own pace it does not have to be super intense but just challenging

enough for you to sweat.

2. Hiit cycling: start off with 2 minutes of a comfortable pace not too hard that way you do not wear yourself out then start gradually increasing the intensity every 10 seconds do this for 30 seconds and then reduce the intensity to a comfortable pace and keep it for another 2 minutes in order get back to a regular breathing pattern then repeat for a total of 8 times totaling out in a 20 minute workout hopefully you are drenched in sweat and you feel amazing.

3. Run/walk for 20-30 minutes

4. Jump rope for 15 minutes at your own pace if you mess up it doesn’t matter just keep going.

Remember to not let your ego get the best of you every workout needs to be at your own pace.

5k On Turkey day No way!

Thanksgiving day, a day when we eat until we can’t move and then we eat some more, it is also a day when we give thanks for everything good that has come to us and for what is yet to come, a day when everyone gets up and eagerly awaits for the time to dig into their glorious turkey feast. Just like everyone that is how my day used to go but this thanksgiving day my wife and I decided that we would do something different and well if you read the title and guessed that we ran a 5k, you guessed right. Yes we signed up for a 5k why? You may ask, well, we wanted to start a new yearly tradition and we enjoy participating in these types of events. This was a different experience because we have only participated in these during the summer, the weather was way colder and our old people joints were not having it. Even with all of our joints crackling and popping like fireworks during the Fourth of July, we put on our warmest exercising clothes and on our way we went. On the way there we saw that the temperature was in the high thirties with an even colder wind chill.

“why the hell did we sign up for this?”

I turned and asked my wife and continued to complain about how cold it was, she vaguely agreed and assured me that we will have fun. Still I was not convinced, To me it seemed like the temperature was a big reason for people to not participate, so I felt like the turnout was not going to be very good. To my surprise there were a ton of people, the turnout immediately changed my mind I went from let’s go home to let’s go do this. The start of the race was a bit slow but once the crowd started to spread out it became easier to run I turned to my wife and told her to let me know when she wanted to slow down and “shockingly” she didn’t, as I felt myself getting into the zone I realized that I could no longer see my wife out of the corner of my eye so I stopped and tried to find her. After a minute had passed I decided that I was going to keep going plus I figured that she didn’t want to really keep up with me because we always end up arguing at these types of events because I want her to keep running and she wants to do it at her own pace. Towards the end I waited for her until she could catch up and we ran the last quarter of a mile together and no more complaints about the cold weather. At the end of the race they had cookies, donuts and coffee, I must admit I did have fun and we managed to cut our finish time by four minutes, I feel like this new tradition is something that I will be looking forward to every year.

Thanksgiving: Only The Turkey Should be Stuffed

Mashed potatoes, turkey, stuffing, pies and cranberry sauce, all important ingredients to make thanksgiving dinner amazing. And for people that are trying to lose weight it can be difficult to keep from falling into the temptation of gobbling till you’re wobbling. I mean I cannot guarantee that I will not be participating in the glorious multi-course meal but I will be making an attempt to try some healthier alternatives. Using mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes and instead of going for a second serving of everything I could take a break by eating extra servings of vegetables. If there are not going to be any healthy alternatives then the thing you can do in order to still enjoy the holiday meals and not feel as guilty is to serve your food to where it fits comfortable on your plate that way you can enjoy the thanksgiving meal and remember the only thing that should stuffed is the turkey and not you. Another thing that you can do which will help you control how much you eat on thanksgiving day is to have breakfast and DO NOT starve yourself to the point where you want to devour everything when dinner comes around. Also one very important thing is to drink enough water, yes I know that there are so many delicious types of beverages whether alcoholic or not but try to drink water and stay hydrated.

Mashed Cauliflower (potato alternative)

Cravings suck (they don’t have to)

Do you ever get a sudden craving for something sweet? I know I do, this always happens to me when I am dieting and trying to drop weight. (Talk about in convenient timing haha) At first I would either get busy and distract my mind or give into my cravings which did not help me at all because not only did I not have the will strong enough to resist my favorite candy or chips or cookies or all of them but I also ate quite a bit of them. I was like the Tasmanian devil from the Looney toons running around devouring every piece of sweets and junk food I could find, I mean it was bad. After all of the dust had settled and I was done scavenging I would sit there and regret everything I just had eaten not only because I felt bad about breaking my diet but because I usually ate so much it would result in a stomach ache. I know what you’re thinking, what are you a child that cannot control yourself around sweets? And yes I am when it comes to sweets I seem to forget all of the time and hard work I have put into losing weight and getting to the fitness level I am at today and I eat. After the twentieth or thirtieth time of doing this, yes it took me a while to get this under control, I realized that there are healthy alternatives to candy and junk food. I sat down and did some research and found a few recipes that might help me with my sweet tooth they were all so simple and they did help.

Here is one of my favorite recipes that I found in my research.

Banana peanut butter wrap

• ½ banana

• 2tbsp peanut butter

• 1 Pita bread, flax oat bran and whole wheat (I look for pita bread that is low in calories)

1. Spread the peanut butter on the pita bread

2. Add the Sliced banana

3. Roll up and enjoy

(For you can also add strawberries or any other type of berries or honey if you do then calories may vary)

The Struggles are Real: Night Shift

Having a nine to five job and trying to stay healthy can be difficult trust me I say this based on my past experience. When I was between the ages of 20-22 I had an office job and yes I do understand that it can be draining because even though you are not very physically active, stress and a busy day schedule can lead to making not very good food choices. I do understand that at the end of the day all you want to do is go home relax and forget about work for a few hours before you have to get up and it all over again the next day. I look back to those days when I weighed 350lbs and to be honest I am embarrassed at the fact that I had all of this free time before and after work and I still refused to make any healthy choices. I would wake up at 7 in the morning and get ready for work without eating breakfast at home but I wouldn’t completely skip breakfast because on the way to the office I would stop and get myself a monster with a muffin every morning. If I would’ve made a better healthier breakfast at home I would not have gained so much weight and my other meal choices were not any healthier. I realize now that if I would have actually sat down and made a schedule for myself that included healthier food choices and waking up earlier to get at least 30 minutes of working out, my life would have been better. The crazy thing was that the time that I decided to make these changes in my life was when I started a different job where I had less free time in my day. I realized that the only way that I was going to start feeling better about myself was by making a lifestyle and yes it was hard at first because I was not very educated in this health and fitness world but all it took was doing some research to get started. Today I still am learning everyday obviously it is not the same as when I started because my endurance, strength and most importantly my goals have changed, now I feel like my situation is what most people would call odd because I work 12 hour night shifts and well the way I see it my day is backwards and it is does take a bit of work to get it right but it is possible to reach your fitness goals and still hold a job Night or Day.

Here are some tips that I use on how to make it so that you don’t overeat while working night shift or any shift:

1. Make sure your first meal is at a scheduled time for example on my days of work I eat my first meal 5:30pm make sure that is is filling and healthy

2. Make sure you carry a snack with you or make sure it is easily accessible during your shift for whenever you start feeling a bit of hunger. I like carrying around a granola bar from hidden valley it is 180 calories per pack I love them.

3. Make sure that you eat your second meal at the same time everyday or at least within the hour (I like my lunch between 1:30 am and 2:30 am) that way you get your body used to the idea that there will be food coming at a specific time and trust me it is easier to control hunger once you get in a routine.

4. If you are still hungry and don’t go over your calories you can have a snack 11/2 to 2 hours before you shift ends and not right before you go to bed let it settle a bit. I have got to the point to where I just consume the majority of my calories with my meals so they are pretty big but they are healthy choices.

I get seven hours of sleep everyday and I am able to make it to the gym for one hour

• Wake up 3pm

• Brush teeth and do my morning stuff 3-3:30pm

• Meditate and take pre-workout 3:30pm-3:45pm

• Gym 3:45pm-5pm

• Eat 5:30pm

• Get ready and leave for work 6pm

So all it takes is some scheduling and you too are able to achieve your health goals.

At first it seemed like a burden but once I got used to it this became something I did without putting too much thought into it.

Vegetarian Options for my meal prep

The recipes that I included in my last post were my favorite because it met my needs and it was simple to make but I also figured that there are some days that I prefer a Vegetarian option too so when I was trying our diets I came across some recipes that I really enjoyed and are as easy as the ones in my last post.

Here is one very easy option for the anyone trying to start a vegetarian option the trick here is you do need to eat quite a bit more in order to meet your calories. At first i was not eating enough because it seemed like too much food was on my plate and I felt like I was overeating. But I wasn’t and it only looked like too much food because I had a food tracking mindset instead of a calorie tracking mindset once in realized that I needed to track my calories it was so much easier to have vegetarian dishes

I use the Lose It! App to track my calories it is the best weight loss tool I have used. (Just click on the words Lose it! And it will take you to the website i highly recommend it)

The plan for your day is still the same as the one on my last post:

Depending on what you decide for dinner, and checkout the app it is so easy to use.

The K.I.S.S. Of dieting: Keep it Simple Stupid

First of all HAPPY DIA DE LOS MUERTOS!!

Making the change from the current lifestyle to a healthy one can be quite confusing and flat out over whelming. With all of the different diets that are out there with their jargon that is hard to understand I mean, what are macros right? Let’s not forget about the pressure to stay on a diet with a strong will, I understand it can be hard trust me I was there at one point. The most difficult task was finding the correct diet to start off with, I don’t think I have enough time to or the hard drive to explain how many different diets I have experimented with. Do not worry there is a silver lining the only thing that makes a difference in changing your lifestyles is by making small changes and starting off small. The way that I can explain is using the snowball effect, the snowball starts off small and grows the more it moves forward.

So yes Keep It Simple Stupid (K.I.S.S.) Is perfect for this post because we tend to over complicate everything to the point where we get overwhelmed and we want to abandon it.

This week I want to share a simple meal prep day that I use when I want to keep everything basic.

Breakfast:

Calories: 252

Scrambled Eggs with cilantro and bell peppers

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 full egg
  • 1 Roma tomato
  • A pinch of pink Himalayan salt ha I don’t measure it I just add a small pinch
  • 1/2 a bell pepper doesn’t matter which color you use it is up to you
  • Cilantro (as much as you want it is low cal A.F.)
  • Black pepper (optional)

Chop up pepper, tomato and cilantro to a desired size then cook with the egg whites and egg in olive oil add pinch off salt and black pepper if desired.

Makes one serving

Snack: Jerky, I like old trapper. The small pack has 3 oz and a total of 210 calories

Lunch:

Makes 4 servings of 6oz each

Calories: 341

Cilantro lime chicken with asparagus

  • 1 1/2 pounds of chicken breast
  • 1tbsp of honey
  • 1tbsp of olive oil
  • One lime
  • 1/2 a cube of tomato bouillon
  • 1/2 cup of cilantro (I love cilantro)
  • 1/2 lbs of asparagus
  • 1/2 cup of water

4. Next slice each chicken breast in half (the long way) and place on top of the asparagus

5. Wash and chop up the cilantro to desired size and sprinkle over the chicken

6. Pour the lime mixture over the chicken make sure every breast gets some

My Personal Workout plan

For this post I have decided to post my workout schedule for anyone that would like to try it. This plan has taken me time to put together I came up with it based on everything that I have learned through out my fitness journey. This does not include my Jiu-jitsu classes

It is ok to start light do not try to go heavy this needs to challenge you do not let your ego get the best of you.

The way I do it is that I chose 4-6 workouts from the lists below based on the day

I do 4 sets here is an example of how I model it:

Sets 1-3 reps of 8-10 at a challenging weight but do not max out

The 4th set I max out on weight and only do 1-3 reps
